The Graduate Institute of Ethnic Relations and Cultures opened its doors to graduate students in 1995, with a continuing education master’s degree program established in 1999. Since 2001 the Graduate Institute of Ethnic Relations and Cultures has been an integral part of the College of Indigenous Studies, and in 2005 we admitted our first Ph.D. students.
Our program is dedicated to promoting scholarship in collaboration with Taiwan’s diverse Aborigine communities, as well as indigenous communities around the world. The Graduate Institute of Ethnic Relations and Cultures is affiliated with the Department of Indigenous Cultures, the two programs sharing the same world-class faculty. Our professors have degrees in political science, anthropology, sociology, history, art history, ethnomusicology, and performance studies from some of the world’s top universities.
The Graduate Institute of Ethnic Relations and Cultures promotes research in a wide variety of subject areas, including: anthropology of education, gender relations, environmental studies, linguistic anthropology, anthropology of religion, human rights, Aborigine art, performance studies, ethnographic filmmaking, etc.
As of June 2006, over 128 students have received their graduate degree with the Graduate Institute of Ethnic Relations and Cultures. Some have gone on to pursue doctoral degrees in Taiwan as well as overseas, while others have performed admirably in their chosen profession. Over the years many of our student’s thesis have won awards recognizing their academic contribution.
