The Graduate Institute of Ethnic Relations and Cultures and Department of Indigenous and Culture Studies have a total of fourteen professors, including an honorary professor, two full professors, four associate professors, six assistant professors and one special project instructor. The research interests of the professors include specific and integrated research of subjects like indigenous studies (including ethnic relations, education, dance, music, history; covering territories including North America, India, China, and all the ethnic groups in Taiwan), politics and economics, cultural critique (tourism, consumerism, daily life), youth development, social welfare and its influence, law and class. In addition to the study of classical theory, students are trained on topics such as post-colonial discourse, culture theory, social science research methods, cultural sociology, cultural anthropology, etc.
The graduate institute has long been concerned with the development and mechanisms of social groups. This includes the identity and awareness of aboriginal people, as well as topics like social change and adaptation to modernity. For many years, the graduate institute has received substantial funding from the “cooperation and training program” of the Institute of Ethnology at the Academia Sinica. This program provides financial subsidies for graduate students to carry out field work. To date, more than one hundred students have graduated from our master’s program; many having gone on to enter PhD programs both in Taiwan and abroad. Other graduates have made outstanding contributions to society in a number of fields. The numerous prizes and research grants awarded to our graduate students attests to our high academic standards. Currently, each year our institute accepts 3 PhD students, 12 regular master’s students and 15 professional master’s students. We enthusiastically welcome qualified candidates to apply to this institute. Let us work together to contribute to the study of contemporary society and culture.
